Music Marketing Is Really IP Building

FlintPop Editorial · 11 April 2026 · 7 min

The default music campaign is a countdown: teaser, snippet, release, press, silence. It works once. Then the audience resets and the next cycle starts from roughly the same place.

The artists who escape that loop are building something that persists between releases, recurring characters, visual grammar, a world with rules. Fans return to a world. They merely notice a single.

A release cycle ends. Intellectual property accrues.

For A&R and management, this reframes the spend. Money that goes into universe assets keeps returning value across releases. Money that goes into a one-off launch does not.

IP creation is the most underused lever in the industry, and it is available to artists at every level, not just the ones with catalogue budgets.
